I Decided to hit Cain Bayou with a plan today. The first part of the plan was two catch fish, the second part was to try new things to catch these fish. The plan worked out perfectly! I set up a perch jerking pole with a black and chartreuse jig to see if I could find some Sac-au-lait. As I made my way down the bayou I stopped at a few productive looking spots and gave it a few cast. All I found was a few blue gills here and there. When I got to the first cut I started fishing with a watermelon baby brush hog and found only one little bass. Moving down a bit further to the second cut I found a fairly steady bite. It was not fast but I was able to pick up five fish before it seemed to shut down. So the hunt continued and on the next bend in the deepest part of the channel I picked two bass. I think I figured them out now. The tide was going out but very slowly and the fish seemed to be in the deeper water at the bottom of the drop off. I just start fishing the bends to see if I am right but for the next hour I only catch maybe five fish. I figured it was a good time to give up and start heading in with about 8 keeper bass in the box. But something wonderful happens on the way back to the launch; the tide starts to pick up. I go back to fishing in the same spots and start pulling in fish every other cast or so. It was a nice little bass party and I was just in time with my new thing I really wanted to try. The new thing is a crank bait and it worked out perfectly. I started experimenting with it found that running it along the bank at the right depth was the key. And I also started to catch larger fish on average. By the end of the trip I caught about 25 bass with the largest at around 2 pounds.
P.S. The crank bait was a KVD 1.5 sexy shad. -farleylbn 12/3/12
