If I could have planned today in advance, it would not have been as good as the one I was handed. Woke up at 2:38 am wide awake, after watching the weather channel, (wind light and variable) and checking out intellicast (wind N at 5) Tide charts (1.68’ falling tide all day) the decision to make a trip to Bayou Biloxi was easy. Loaded up the boat and headed to The Rigolets about 4:15 I had to stop for gas so launch time was 4:45, even beat the guides. Talked to Wayne and his fishing partner and off into the dark we went. Lake Borgne was as smooth as glass and the first cast was at the last place I caught in the Bob‘s lakes area, happened in the dark at about 5:30 or 6. Gnats and skeeters started instantly so on went the deep woods off and gnat net. It was a light incoming tide so I just let the boat drift and kept tension on the cork that I couldn’t see, wow, 4 keeper trout in the box before it was light enough to make out the cork. Tide and bite quit but the turn around on the tide followed pretty quick, then the excitement started. As oneofthepack would say, “the crazy 15 minutes started“. Shrimp chased by specks were hitting the side of the boat and the trout were on a feeding frenzy, as fast as I could cast, the cork would disappear and another trout flopped around on the floor. Easy to stay on them but quite a few throw backs were mixed in. Amazingly not one other boat came by to disrupt the bite. Frenzy quit as fast as it started so I made a deck count, 4 in the box 20 on the floor, need 1 more and it was only 7:32, 10 or so minutes of casting produced # 25 at 7:48. Nowhere near ready to stop fishing I had the urge to explore. Remembered a spot I saw on Google maps that resembled the one I just fished ( water moving into a lake). Made the quick run and saw the birds everywhere, 4 cast and 4 trout returned to be caught another day, remembered I don’t like catch and release fishing. Decided to call it a quick day (back in Slidell for 10:30) and get home to go to 2 nephews little league football game. That’s when their parents invited me to join them for the last part of the LSU game and food. Menu was shrimp kabobs, raw oysters, and oysters on the half shell, grilled in garlic butter. oh yeah, boiled shrimp and sausage.
Water temp I think was 65-68, clean where I fished, light incoming to start and falling to finish. All fish caught on chartreuse cocahoe tail, under a popping cork. Ended the morning with:
25 specks 12-16”
2 hardheads
