This last week I've kinda hit fishing pretty hard with the good weather we've been experiencing. Monday and Wednesday trips kinda went like this, hit the causeway, hit the reef and then to the mouth of the Tchefuncte river. We hadn't been doing anything great at the first two stops but we put together good catches with my last stop two times in a row. Well this morning I decide to make my usual last stop, my first, and boy did it pay off. We started across from old T-Rivers and immediately started picking up trout. Now for those who say wait a minute, I thought the the river was fresh water, well yes and no. At certain times the water salinity will go up and the lake is less than a 1/2 mile away so why shouldn't trout be there. It's usually full of shad and on good full moons shrimp. Everything that trout need is there and for the few that know the lake and it's rivers they take full advantage. I just made an adjustment in my thinking and started fishing where the fish were. We worked them over with Matrix Shads Jigging and tight-lining. The fish seemed to be more on the ledges going from 5 to 6ft to the channel at 10 to 12ft. The technique was cast out and keep a tight line till the bait hit bottom, let it set a second or two and pop it a couple of times and then slow roll it back to you.The fish would hit the bait on the fall or when you slowly reeled it in. Water was 61 degrees and a slow outgoing tide if at all. Sure enough other boats started taking notice and had 4 or 5 following me around trying to figure out what I was doing. Some got so aggravated they threw their arms up in disgust. Even gave a few baits away to some guys with kids and they even caught a few. Really I believe it was the feel of the bite which was very soft most times. We ended the day with 3 limits at 11 AM. I really am amp'd to go in the a.m. but weather may be a factor. What a great day it was with my s/son and his podna that couldn't believe there are trout in the river.
