The Florida Parishes Bass Anglers made their third stop of their 2016 tournament trail at Bayou LaCombe on April 9, 2016. The temps had dropped as our luck with weather continues this year and the low tide combined with a couple of days of north winds had the water low. The 24 boats and 41 members filled the small launch up as the talk was centered on the cold morning and wondering how the low water was going to affect the green trout we were after. As the numbers were called most of the boats headed south to head for more friendly waters to the east of LaCombe while the rest headed north to the cypress lined banks.
As the boats came in to the scales everyone agreed the day was tough despite the good weights, only 7 limits were brought in. Short fish were abundantly caught but keepers proved tough to get in the boat as the anglers discussed the “funny bite” most teams experienced that caused lost fish. As true in most of the clubs tournaments a couple boats always figure out how to catch them and this day was not to be the exception as it took over 10 lbs to make the top 3 and over 8 lbs to cut a check with 2 fish over 5 lbs being weighed and a new club record big bass. The 1st place team of Jean Junuis and John Gillespie put in the time to pre fish and stayed on top of the changing water conditions to bring in one of the biggest sacks the Northshore area as put out in recent years. This leaves little doubt the area has the potential to be as good a fishery as anywhere as in the state if the marsh bass had time to grow. The veteran northshore team had to combine to carry their FPBA club record 17.72 lb sack to the scales. Included was the Mister Twister sponsored tournament big bass of 6.01 lbs.
The 2nd place team of Patrick Engerran and Bailey Madere benefited from the rising tide late to bring in 10.32 lb bag that included a 5.63 lb kicker. In 3rd place was the two well-known Slidell area anglers of Jared Norris and Cameron Wagner with a beautiful 10.29 lb bag. Trenton Pittman took 4th place fishing this one solo with 8.48 lbs. 5th place team of Bob Battistella and Joe Redmond took advantage of the Tight Lines Bait & Tackle sponsorship to round out the money winners. Congrats to all the teams that cut a check and thanks to all the members that came out to fish. In total 20 teams weighed fish out of the 24. Four of the teams not in the money also took home $10 gift cards to a large sporting goods chain thanks to Stalker Fishing Lures, it actually pays to hang around for our weigh ins.
