St. Tammany Bass Club held its April tournament on Toledo Bend in Many, Louisiana. It was nice for a change of scenery. To some it can seem pretty intimidating because of the vastness of the lake, which stretches 65 miles from north to south. This gives you a great deal of options on where to fish so you can find some less populated water. You can also catch them in a wide variety of ways from anywhere from 1 foot to 110 feet! To anyone who has never been I would recommend you to visit Many, Louisiana and that gem of a lake known as “The Bend!” Mid-March is a great time to go when water temps start to climb to that magical number we as bass fishers love which moves the fish to shallow spawning areas. But beware of that fickle woman known as Mother Nature, cold fronts this time of year are common and will kill an unbelievable bite. Our club had firsthand experience of this on our trip. Friday on scouting day, temperatures were in the mid-70s with water temps in the high 60s. The hot topic around the dinner table Friday evening were the number of 20 pound sacks of fish caught. Club members were eager to get this derby started and were commenting about needing to catch 20 plus sacks to cash a check! Remember that fickle woman I mentioned? She just happened to blow into town early Saturday morning as anglers awoke to a temperature of 48 degrees!!!! Water temps dropped from 68 degrees to 60 degrees, which doesn’t seem like much, but it pulled the fish anglers found shallow the prior day to GONE the next. Time to deploy plans d, e, & f! Although not 20 pound sacks of fish were caught some decent ones were weighed in. Congrats to the winners: 1st Paul Paille with 14.43; 2nd “The Prez” Walter Clairain with 12.51 and who also had big bass honors with a 6 pounder; and 3rd to James Earl Clairain with 11.79. Enjoyed it guys and look forward to seeing y’all at the next derby!
