Last Friday I headed to the Tchefuncte do some bass fishing. My two friends and I were greeted with muddy and high water at the fourth street launch. I hit some of my spots working my way downriver and did pick up a nice one on topwater. As I got closer to the mouth I noticed black water coming out of the cuts. Automatically I thought the rice fields is were it's at. My friends and I actually debated going in there for a bit but finally I had them convinced. We ran down to the tranasse just before the bulk head. I tossed my buddy's two Shu-Shu shads in the victory red color and told them to Texas rig it. My friends first cast is in the tranasse and he catches a nice chunky marsh bass. I then notice a boat coming from the bulkhead and I asked if they had done any good. They told me they caught 3 or 4. Their poles looked to be rigged up for shiners which made me think we were in for a tough day. As I always like to do I positioned the boat directly across from the bulkhead to throw on the outside. My buddies cast and I look back to see them reeling 2 fish in the boat. That made me excited and I grabbed my Texas rig pole and ripped the worm off to put the Shu-Shu shad on it. I got in on the action and started reeling them in.
We were catching fish like madmen for the next couple hours. We threw them back but kept track of the fish we caught. I took a Shu-Shu and dipped the tail in chartreuse spike it and caught fish that way. We watched the numbers climb. 10 then 15, 20 then 25 and by the time we the action quit we were just shy of a 3 man limit. Bass were busting shad and mullet all around us. A big key to our success was having a light falling tide rather than it roaring out and not tying up right against the bulkhead. The water temp was in the low 80's and to top it off it was cloudy the majority of the trip so we barley broke a sweat. I knew trips like that could be made in the rice fields canal but it was all about timing. I will be going back again when the conditions get right. -BassPro16 6-29-14
