It's All About Lake Borgne!
If you’re looking for saltwater action here on the Northshore, Lake Borgne is leading the list of top spots to find fish. Since the closing of the spillway the area has been coming back to life with reports of mullet and shrimp on the waters surface, and trout and redfish in the ice box.
Rick Miller of Slidell wanted to stock up on live shrimp before launching but the marina was out of shrimp. Rick and his brother-in-law decided to purchase a bucket of cocahoe minnows instead. They launched at the Rigolets at 5:15 a.m. and made the run out to Lake Borgne. After failing to find speckled trout the team decided to hit the shoreline and try for redfish. “We hit shorelines and tidelines with Vudo Shrimp and cocahoes under corks and managed 10 reds by 10:30 a.m.” says Rick. James Hall lives in Eden Isles has been fishing Lake Borgne daily and says the amount of baitfish in the water is a great sign. “I haven't seen as much baitfish and shrimp schooling in a long time! We saw lots of schools of baitfish working the shorelines and points all over Lake Borgne,” says James. The tide was falling on this day and the action was heavy as his father, Jim, and girlfriend, Loren, managed to catch 15 redfish, 2 flounder, 1 trout, and 1 drum. James says all the fish were caught on Matrix Shad in the Ultraviolet color.
The Golden Boy Nick Spadoni and his son Dominick, decided to make a trip to Lake Borgne after what Nick describes as a slow day at work. “It was a slow day at the office, so we did a ‘Team Building’ exercise.” he jokes. Nick’s daughter Chelsie, is of the belief that Dominck is the “Golden Boy” because he works with his father and also receives the benefits of going fishing with him when the job permits. “Yeah she’s always stuck at work at her job so she never gets to come with us,” Nick says.
The father-son team left work and headed to Lake Borgne through Unknown Pass but the action was slow for a few hours. Then the silence broke. “We randomly were cruising the shoreline to cool off when a big drum hit my son’s line,” he says. Dominick was dragging a Golden Boy Suicide Croaker behind the boat when the drum hit. After landing the big fish, Nick noticed some surface action on the water near the bank and decided to inspect. It was there that they found clean water and immediately picked up a 13.5” trout. They kept fishing and caught 5 redfish before calling it quits because of the heat. All the fish were caught on the Golden Boy Croaker. “I guess you can say the Golden Boy caught them on the Golden Boy,” Nick jokes. Tournament Results It was another hot morning on Bayou Liberty for the 20 anglers who gathered to fish the last Bass Assassins tournament. The only relief was the fact that it was supposed to stay cloudy all morning. The clouds made it tolerable until around 10:00 a.m. Then the sun came out and it got hot. The fishing was better than expected which was a pleasant change and hopefully a sign of better fishing to come. In first place was Jimmy Dorris with a 5-fish limit that weighed 10 lbs. 10 oz. Jimmy also had big fish of the day with his 4 lb. 10 oz. bass. In second place was Timmy Dickens with a 6 lb. 13 oz. limit. Danny Giovingo took third place with a 5-fish limit totaling 6 lbs. 6 oz. I created NFR.com in the spring of 2012. Since then it has filled the void of absent information on the web about fishing on the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain. Northshore Fishing Report has morphed into a brand name and can be found not only on the web, but on radio and newspaper. As NFR grows I will continue to work hard at keeping NFR local focusing on local anglers, reports, seminars, and fishing tournaments in St. Tammany and Tangipahoa Parish. Support for NFR is crucial to its growth and I'm always looking for sponsors whether it be for web, radio, or newspaper. If you have any questions please email me at: Keith@NorthshoreFishingReport.com
