Shoreline Specks!
The speckled trout that have inundated the shoreline between Bayou Bonfouca and Bayou Lacombe are still wreaking havoc on baitfish and anglers are taking advantage of it. Wayne Bordelon of Lacombe launched his boat for an evening trip and headed to the shoreline between Bayou Lacombe and Bonfouca. The water was high but falling on this evening. Recent reports show the specks mixing within the schools of mullet which are concentrated in patches of eelgrass. “There was baitfish everywhere!” Wayne says. With the high water we’ve seen, conditions for fishing over the grass have been optimal. Wayne says that it was helpful on this trip. “The tide was very high but that allowed us to fish over the grass. I think that was the ticket,” he says. As the Lacombe angler started to pick up specks he noticed a pattern. “It seems like when we were directly in the school of mullet we didn’t do as good as when we were fishing the edges of the schools. I guess those trout were hanging on the outer edges of the baitfish,” he says.
Wayne was throwing a MirrOdine Lure and was able to catch a limit of trout along the shoreline. “It’s nice to see things back to normal out there. The water looked beautiful,” he says. Irish Bayou Kevin Morris of New Orleans fishes out of a canoe but instead of paddling, he has a trolling motor mounted to it which helps him cover more water. He fished the Irish Bayou area and launched at the the truck stop off of Chef Hwy. Morris says tried using a Vudu Shrimp under a cork but didn’t have much luck. He then tried a swimbait casting at the submerged grass and found speckled trout. “I fished from noon until 3:00 and caught 6 trout and lost a couple more,” he says. The fish measured 12”-13” with one topping 16”. Trestle Trout James Hall has been concentrating on the Trestles Train Bridge and finding speckled trout. But it wasn’t until his last trip that he was able to find what’s often referred to as “World Series Trout” at the bridge. He’s made a few trips already to the bridge but the size of the fish left something to be desired. James says he’s finally starting to see the bigger fish move in. “The first schools of larger trout I've seen this year are at the bridges now in Pontchartrain,” he says. Hall was fishing a falling tide at the Trestles with a Matrix Shad on a 3/8 Goldeneye jig head. He finished the day with 12 trout but says 3 of them measured over 18 inches. Look for the Northshore Fishing Report publication every Thursday in The Slidell Independent Weekly Newspaper!
I created NFR.com in the spring of 2012. Since then it has helped link Northshore fishermen to valuable information and has filled the void of absent information on the web about fishing on the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain. Northshore Fishing Report has morphed into a brand name and can be found not only on the web, but on radio and newspaper. As NFR grows I will continue to work hard at keeping NFR local focusing on local anglers, reports, seminars, and fishing tournaments in St. Tammany and Tangipahoa Parish. I hope you enjoy the website and If you have any questions please email me at: Keith@NorthshoreFishingReport.com
