Training at the Trestles
![]() Lawerence Bolline of Covington has been fishing with his wife Cheryl, since they were married. Along the way he’s showed her a thing or two in order to be a fishing partner that he is proud to fishing along side of. However, on the couples latest fishing trip to the Trestles, Lawrence witnessed something that may have altered his training program.
The couple was fishing the train bridge in which Lawerence says was comparable to a boat show. “Yeah I decided to join the boat show so we found a spot to tuck into the other boats and started fishing,” Bolline says. The couple were both using a combination of Ultraviolet and Green Hornet Matrix on a 3/8 oz. jig head on the bottom. Lawrence says the bite was sporadic but they managed 14 speckled trout by 11:00 a.m. During the morning Lawrence and his wife were monitoring what the other boats were catching and he says “There were two couples on both sides of us which is rare. They were just casting out and retrieving plastics and catching one here and there; just enough to keep interest.” It was until about 10:00 however that Cheryl’s interest was distracted from what the other boats were catching, to how the gentleman were treating the ladies in the boat. “My wife was quick to notice that when the female of the boat would catch a fish and the man would remove it, measure it, and then ice it,” Bolline says. “One guy even gave the female his pole to continue fishing while he performed these administrative tasks.” Lawrence wants to remind those who perform these tasks that it effects others who are adhering to the “tough love” program. “I would urge you gentlemen who do this to step up your training program as you are making life harder for those of us who have spent considerable time, patience and motivation (mostly yelling) to correct this deficiency. So, please gentlemen, get with the program if this applies to you!” he jokes. The Causeway to Goose Point
The 24-mile bridge known as the Causeway over the middle of Lake Pontchartrain has a certain grip on anglers who remember recall its heyday. While the bridge has never been known for limits of speckled trout there was a certain mystique about it among speckled trout anglers who have known its potential for producing big fish. Rick Mecum of is one of those anglers who find it hard to give up on the bridge even though the last 2 years have been the worst producing years in over 2 decades. Rick started out trolling the bridge and “caught nothing,” says Mecom. After not catching anything dragging baits he switched over to jigging the pilings with plastics and “caught nothing.” Rick decided to check out some spots that were close to the bridge so he made a run to the artificial reef on the east side of the Causeway known as the N1 Reef. Once again he came up empty. He moved further east to Goose Point and that’s where he found a few specks catching 2 and loosing one at the boat. He was using a double rig with purple colored Matrix shad. He added one redfish and then set the hook on what Rick calls the biggest drum he has ever caught. “That thing took me 15 minutes to get in the boat,” he says. Mecum released the monster fish and decided to make his way back to the launch. Upon passing Bayou Cane he spotted a flock of birds, but Rick says they weren’t interested in sticking around. “As I got closer I saw that it was a huge school of reds but by the time he got situated the fish and the birds disappeared. Rick made it back tot the launch where he says he talked to a gentleman who jigged the Causeway all morning and was able to catch redfish and flounder. “Hopefully this is a sign of better fishing,” Rick says. Pearl River WMA Closed The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has closed the Pearl River Wildlife Management Area because of high river levels. The gate at the entrance to the WMA on Old Highway 11 will be closed and locked. Officials say It will remain closed until the river recedes below 16.5 feet and the roads have been inspected. Included in the closure is the Pearl River-Honey Island Shooting Range, located in the Pearl River WMA. ![]() |
![]() I created NFR.com in the spring of 2012. Since then it has helped link Northshore fishermen to valuable information and has filled the void of absent information on the web about fishing on the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain. Northshore Fishing Report has morphed into a brand name and can be found not only on the web, but on radio and newspaper. As NFR grows I will continue to work hard at keeping NFR local focusing on local anglers, reports, seminars, and fishing tournaments in St. Tammany and Tangipahoa Parish. I hope you enjoy the website and If you have any questions please email me at: Keith@NorthshoreFishingReport.com
Look for the Northshore Fishing Report publication every Thursday in The Slidell Independent Weekly Newspaper!
