Line Pullers in the Biloxi Marsh
A transplant from New England, Scott O’Neal moved to the Northshore 3 years ago. In New England he fished for striped bass in the summer but says since moving here, his new favorite fish to catch is redfish. His Brother-in-law, Kurt, flew in from Maine and Scott wanted to introduce him to catching reds. He took his wife and Kurt to the Biloxi Marsh where he felt confident they could put some fish in the boat. They made an afternoon trip in which they launched out of Campo’s Marina. Upon reaching their destination, they targeted cuts coming out of the marsh and while the action wasn’t fast, it was steady.
They managed to catch 12 redfish and also caught 4 speckled trout. The redfish they caught didn’t disappoint as Scott says “Most of them were line pullers being in the 22 to 26-inch range with the biggest trout being 18 inches.” The redfish were caught with shrimp under a cork and gold spoons while the speckled trout hit chartreuse Matrix Shad tipped with shrimp under a cork.
Rigolets James Hall lives in Eden Isles and made a run to the Rigolet’s with his Girlfriend Lauren Baker to check out how the cleaner water has affected the area. He was pleasantly surprised when not only did they catch speckled trout but also flounder. They were jigging the bottom with swim-baits in 3-6 feet of water. With the higher water that we are seeing from the storm the fishing should get even better and with the improved salinity and baitfish entering the lake James says he may not have to fish the Rigolet’s. “This season is looking good for Lake Pontchartrain - I may not have to go far from the neighborhood this year,” he says. Relief for Charter Captains One of the hardest hit industry’s during the shutdown this past spring was the charter fishing industry. Captains watched their scheduled trips disappear from the calendar and with it, their income. Starting Monday, September 14, The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will begin accepting applications for $14.6 million in financial assistance that will be available to Louisiana fishermen and others in the industry who have been financially affected by the alleged COVID-19 pandemic. The funds are part of the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Applications will be accepted online only at www.wlf.louisiana.gov. The application process will be open for a six-week period. The deadline to submit applications is 11:59 p.m. on October 26. Funding allocation is structured so that all applications submitted before the deadline will be considered. Tournament Results
Bass Assassins held its tournament at the East Pearl River. Anglers were greeted by cool dry air and a nice breeze. It was a pleasant change from the heat that fisherman have been experiencing. When it came time for blast off, 28 anglers raced off to their spots as their number was called out. The water was slightly high and falling. The water temperature was in the mid 80's and big bags were expected at the scales come noon. However, It didn't take long to see everyone struggled as they came back to the launch. Shane Dunnegan brought in the heaviest bag of fish with a total of 10 lbs. Mark Moore finished in second place with a 8 lb. 5 oz. limit. Third place went to Steve Hadley for his 6 lb. 13 oz. limit. The big fish of the day was a 3 lb. 11 oz. kicker brought in by Jay Breland. |
I created NFR.com in the spring of 2012. Since then it has helped link Northshore fishermen to valuable information and has filled the void of absent information on the web about fishing on the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain. Northshore Fishing Report has morphed into a brand name and can be found not only on the web, but on radio and newspaper. As NFR grows I will continue to work hard at keeping NFR local focusing on local anglers, reports, seminars, and fishing tournaments in St. Tammany and Tangipahoa Parish. I hope you enjoy the website and If you have any questions please email me at: Keith@NorthshoreFishingReport.com
Look for the Northshore Fishing Report publication every Thursday in The Slidell Independent Weekly Newspaper!
