There are many words, good and bad, to describe fishing right now but in Lake Ramsey it's on fire! February and March is my favorite two months on the lake. The bass fishing explodes and the Sac-a- lait come out there winter holes. I'll start off with Friday. I only had one thing on my mind all day at school and that was fishing. Raced home, hooked up the boat, and packed my clothes for the night. My friend cancelled on me for Friday evening fishing because he didn't realize he had to work. Well I'm close with his Grandparents so I said what the heck I'll just go anyway. (The original plan was fish Friday evening sleep over there and fish Saturday.) Got on the road and first stop was the Lake Ramsey bait shop. Picked up a couple dozen shiners and saw Elvis in there so I talked to him a few mins. Got on my way and made it to the Grandparents with about an hour left of sunlight. Got the launch key and drove to launch. If any of y'all have used the launch over there you know it takes about 20 mins to drive all the way around the neighborhood.
By the time I got boat in the water I had about 30 mins left of fishing light. Focused just on Sacs and all I had to show was 1 catfish. Time ran out and I parked the boat at the grandparents dock where my friend had just showed up from work. We went to a school basketball game to kill some time and crashed once we returned home. I always get really excited when I go there because I know it will be a great day. Didn't sleep a wink and woke up about 20 mins too early but I was too excited so we got an early start. (30 mins before daylight) First spot I went to was my Christmas Trees I put out about a month ago. I have been trying hard to catch something off of the them but no luck. It was 37 degrees and water temp was 49 degrees. It has dropped 5 degrees from the previous afternoon. Fished till about 8 with about four bass to show for it all about 1-2lbs. My buddy had to get another jacket and grab some food so I brought him back to the house and jump out the boat to start fishing off the grandparents dock. (Over the years there have been about 40 Christmas trees put out out there) In about 15 minutes I catch 6 solid bass in the 2-3lb range.
My friend came back out to a cooler of flopping bass. Ran back out and caught a few more bass and two big Sacs. It was about lunch time and we headed in to eat. As I pulled up to the dock my friends grandpa is reeling in a 4lber. We threw it back to swim another day. I throw out and catch one about equal to the last. I let it go too. I Only like keeping the smaller ones. We ate lunch and another friend from school met us out there for round two. My new goal for the evening was to catch a bass for Keith's new big fish competition. There are a bunch of sunken logs that we always pull fish out of and as we pulled up I told them this is were the big one is. I picked up my black and blue RP3 jig with a crawfish trailer and pitched it past the logs. As I worked it I could feel a bump, bump, bump with each passing tree branch. Then I felt a different one. I knew that was it and set the hook. I could feel the fish hung up in the branches and knew it was a big one. Lucky I had my braid pole and horsed it out of there. My friend asked if it was a netter but didn't need an answer as soon as he saw it. Got it in and weighed it. Came out to be 5lbs 9oz. The baits for the day were an RP3 flipping craw in purple color and the black/blue color. Baby brush hog in a rust color. And Blue and Black RP3 jig. -Basspro16 2/18/14
