Perfect 10 days are back!![]() Keith Lusher Jr
It’s been a while since we’ve experienced these conditions on the Northshore. Overnight lows in the 50’s, water temperatures into the 70’s, barometric pressure holding steady, and light winds for days on end. Add to it the inordinate amounts of bait in the water and you have what fisherman so affectionately refer to as the perfect 10 day. Speckled trout are nearing the end of their fall transition and becoming grouped together rendering them more predictable than in recent weeks. You should be able to locate these schools of trout if you find the baitfish. Now that the winds have shifted to the north, the falling tide holds tons of value. The white shrimp are being sucked from the marshes and dispersed into the bayous. Scan the surface of the water where these cuts and run-offs drain into the main bayou. Look for shrimp popping on the surface or birds diving.

The “Great Wall” as referred to by the locals, has been producing quality trout and redfish this month. Chris Populis and some friends recently made a trip out to the wall and finished the day with a 60 speckled trout. Chris talks about his trip, “We met at the chef launch just as the sun was coming up. We made our way over to the wall and on our first stop we saw a lot of bait on the fish finder but also saw fish holding under the bait so that was a good sign. We started picking a few up but it was nothing steady so we made a move. On the second stop we hit pay dirt! We started catching bigger fish holding in 30ft of water. I thought it was pretty cool at times we were all hooked up at same time!” Lately the drop shot has been anglers preferred way to catch trout and for Chris and his friends, it seemed like that was the ticket on that day. “We were catching them on TKO Shrimp in red clear color and shrimp cocktail on drop shot rigs that I had made myself at work. That seemed to really work well that day.” Chris said.

Bayou Liberty
Fishing on Bayou Liberty has been good for the month of October but the bigger fish haven’t quite showed up yet in the bayou. Reports of bigger trout being caught early in the morning on top-water lures have recently been popping up. Head down Bayou Liberty until you reach the lake. Target the shoreline from the mouth of Bayou Bonfouca all the way to Flatpoint. Baitfish are moving up and down that shoreline and the bigger trout are mauling them during the early morning hours. Use top-water lures such as MirrOmullet’s and Top Dog’s in the red and white color.
October FrontsMost fisherman chalk up the day after a cold front as a lost day on the fishing calendar but don’t be fooled. The troughs that bring cooler air across the southeast in October can often have a positive effect on fishing the day after. Fish use barometric pressure as a way to sense when cold air near. When a cold front approaches, the pressure drops and the fish feed heavily in anticipation of colder days ahead. A typical
cold front in October however, doesn’t drop the barometric pressure enough to
have much an effect on the day after. If anything, the cooler air mass drops the
water temperature sometimes five degrees, which could be just the trigger
needed to spark fish to start feeding.
